If your keyboard doesn't have diodes, certain combinations of keypresses can carry the signal to places that trick the controller into believing some other keys are being pressed when they actually aren't. Notice how the signal is flowing through the 9 key in the "wrong" direction, from a row to a column, which leads to a phantom keypress of the 4 key because 6 is on the same row as 4.
